HOW MIGHT APPLE BECOME THE WORLD LEADER IN THE INCLUSION + DIVERSITY SPACE, NOT ONLY IN THE WORK PLACE BUT ALSO IN THEIR CUSTOMERS' DAY-TO-DAY LIVES?

Context
When Tim Cook tasked his Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives with a challenge to position Apple as a leader in diversity and inclusion—we set to unpacking the psychology of unconscious bias and the potential of digital interventions. Our efforts ultimately yielded a framework and digital strategy to position Apple as a standard-bearer in diversity and inclusion, not only in the work place—but in the world at large.

This opportunity finding for good initiative had our team co-creating with experts in technology, behavior psychology, and organizational design in order synthesize a framework for activating inclusion.

Mapping Framework to Digital Strategy
As we developed a cohesive framework for inclusion that scaled from the individual to society—visualized where a digital product offering would have the greatest impact.

Diversity + Inclusion at Scale
Mapping organizational initiatives and the scale at which they create impact gave the team a comparative/competitive backdrop to how Apple might bring about true transformation.

Narrative Workshop to Inspire
We developed a workshop to inspire stakeholders and co-develop a shared vision for not only a more inclusive Apple, but a more inclusive world.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Led Experience Design and strategy for a suite of digital products and touchpoints.

  • Collaborated with a team of Strategist and behavior scientist on movement making and systems thinking framework.

  • Collaborated with Product Manager on product definition, and business goals.

  • Collaborated with Visual Designer on digital content generation and branding.

Developing a Product Vision
As Lead Experience designer, I collaborated with our team of strategists and behavior scientist to extend our Diversity + Inclusion framework into actionable products. We began by aligning key inclusion skills to digital affordances that would help individuals be more mindful of their own blindspots and grow empathy toward others. I worked within the Apple iOS and WatchOS UI frameworks to prototype features that would manifest in existing products as well as new products that would extend Apple’s digital ecosystem.

I developed scripts that grounded key product features and affordances in real-world scenarios—helping stakeholders envision each product as a positive daily intervention that encourage mindfulness.
